In the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, Bhutan Animal Rescue and Care, (BARC) is putting in practice the Universal principle that all sentient beings deserve compassion and freedom from suffering. The new BARC Centre for Animal Happiness (C4AH) is fully embedded within the natural surroundings and will be the nation’s first fully equipped, 24/7 animal hospital and sanctuary—a place where suffering ends and second chances begin.

The CRAH will aslo have a Visitor and Education Building—where school children, visitors, and international researchers will engage on animal welfare and furthering how humans, animals, and nature coexist in harmony. Buddhist values of compassion will guide the next generation toward a mindful relationships with all living beings, allowing BARC to move beyond preventing animal suffering.

But we cannot do this alone.

The Centre for Animal Happiness will scale animal care by providing the equipment, trained staff, and space desperately lacking today. With your support, we can care for exponentially more animals, upgrade round the clock veterinary services and further grow our public support.
Will you join us in this sacred mission?

Designed in traditional Bhutanese architectural style, the Centre for Animal Happiness will be anchored by two key structures.

Animal Clinic Buildings

The Animal Clinic is thus where our core activities of animal rescue, treatments, in-patient care, rehabilitation, training and e.g., routine sterilizations and vaccinations will take place. It will also comprise a small animal food preparation building and laundry building.

The Visitor and Education Building

The visitor and education building serves as a transformative space promoting animal welfare and nature regeneration. By fostering deeper connections between humans, animals and nature, this facility advances both animal well-being and Bhutan’s  cherished development philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

Cultural Heritage Meets Modern Sustainability

BARC was gifted a historical Bhutanese home, nominated to be destroyed, which we disassembled and preserved. The traditional architecture and timber work are integrated within a modern sustainable and regenerative design of the visitor/education building. This centuries-old structure will therewith continue its legacy—now as a beacon of compassion, education, and cultural preservation.

In the new building, every window frames the beauty of the surrounding nature, every beam tells a story of stability and renewal, and every design choice deepens our connection to the natural world we have pledged to protect.
