What is BARC’s mission & work?
What is BARC and what do you do?
- BARC (Bhutan Animal Rescue and Care) is a civil society organization formally established on June 14, 2013

Why focus on animals in Bhutan?
- BARC’s guiding vision promotes Animal Happiness, mirroring Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy
- Emphasize respectful, kind, and compassionate treatment of animals
- Aim to nurture a harmonious relationship between humans and animals
- While Bhutan’s Buddhist values naturally support compassion for animals, many animals still suffer from illness, injury, and starvation
- Our work addresses this critical need while honoring Bhutanese culture and values
What is the symbol in the BARC logo?
The Eternal Knot (also called the Endless Knot) is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. This ancient symbol represents the interconnection of all life—showing how all beings and events are woven together in an infinite pattern with no beginning or end.
The knot also symbolizes the union of wisdom and compassion in action. For BARC, this perfectly embodies our mission: recognizing that the welfare of animals, people, and the environment are all interconnected, and that compassionate action grounded in understanding creates lasting positive change for all sentient beings.
